Breaking Into the Built Environment: A Conversation with Reuben Beechook, Commercial Graduate at Vistry Group

At BPIC Network, we are always on the lookout for inspiring stories from professionals making their mark in the construction and built environment industries. We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Reuben Beechook, a Commercial Graduate at Vistry Group, to hear about his journey from university to joining one of the UK’s leading housebuilders.

BPIC: Reuben, thank you for speaking with us! Can you tell us how you discovered Vistry and what drew you to the role?

Reuben: Absolutely! I came across the graduate position on LinkedIn while searching for jobs right after university. At the time, I was just looking for any opportunity to get my foot in the door of the real estate and built environment sector. Vistry stood out because it’s such a well-established company, and as the largest housebuilder in the UK, it felt like a perfect place to start. After doing some research, I decided to apply, sent in my CV, and was thrilled when I was invited to the assessment process.

BPIC: What was the recruitment process like? Did it live up to your expectations?

Reuben: The recruitment process was very smooth and supportive, which was a great first impression of the company. Vistry kept me informed at every stage, from the assessment day to what to expect during the interview. Even as a graduate, you feel valued right from the start. They also offered flexibility; for example, since I was studying in Scotland, they offered me the option of a virtual interview. But I decided to attend in person because I wanted to get a feel for the company and the office environment.

The interview itself was professional but also personable. We had the usual formal questions, but the conversation afterward felt more like they were trying to get to know me as a person, not just a candidate.

BPIC: What happened after you secured the role? Did Vistry do anything special to ease your transition into the workplace?

Reuben: Definitely! The onboarding process at Vistry was a standout experience. Before our official start, we were invited to the Vistry Innovation Centre (VIC) with other graduates. That was invaluable because it allowed us to connect with peers in the same boat before our first day. Building those relationships early on made a big difference—we weren’t starting this journey alone.

The welcome week was another highlight. It was well-organized, with senior management sharing their stories, giving us insights into their careers, and setting the tone for what to expect. The Future Talent Team put so much effort into making us feel at home, even sending us welcome packs with thoughtful gifts. These little touches really make you feel appreciated and part of a team.

BPIC: It sounds like Vistry invests heavily in its graduates. How has the first month been for you?

Reuben: It’s been great so far. My team has been incredibly supportive—they give you the space to learn by doing, which is how I learn best. You’re thrown into tasks but with the assurance that your team is there if you need guidance. Vistry understands that as a graduate, you don’t have all the answers yet, but they focus on helping you grow.

One thing I love is that Vistry welcomes graduates from diverse educational backgrounds. My degree wasn’t directly related to construction, but that wasn’t a barrier. They value fresh perspectives and are committed to nurturing talent.

BPIC: What’s next for you at Vistry?

Reuben: I’m about to start my next rotation in a new department, which I’m really looking forward to. It’s a chance to broaden my understanding of the business and develop new skills. Every step of the way, Vistry has encouraged growth and supported me in my journey.

BPIC: Finally, what would you say to someone considering a graduate scheme at Vistry?

Reuben: Go for it! It’s not all smooth sailing—no job ever is—but Vistry truly cares about its employees and their development. If you’re passionate about the built environment and want to grow with a company that invests in its people, this is the place to be.

At BPIC, we’re inspired by Reuben’s journey and excited to see him continue to thrive at Vistry. His story is a testament to the opportunities available for young professionals in the built environment and the importance of companies creating welcoming, supportive environments for the next generation of leaders.
