As a Commercial Graduate at Vistry Group, I have the unique opportunity to rotate through several key departments, including Quantity Surveying, Estimating, Buying, Regional Finance, Land & Planning, and Construction. This rotational program allows me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the business and develop a diverse skill set. I chose to work for Vistry because of its strong industry reputation, commitment to professional development, and the opportunity to work on impactful projects that shape communities.
Why did you choose this career path
I chose this career path because it offers a dynamic and varied experience within the construction industry. The rotational program appealed to me as it provides exposure to different facets of the business, allowing me to discover my strengths and interests.
I enjoy the challenge of working in a fast-paced environment and the opportunity to contribute to projects from multiple perspectives, whether it's through financial analysis, planning, or hands-on construction management.
What did you study in school/university?
I studied Mathematics at the University of Sheffield. The rigorous analytical training I received during my degree has been incredibly beneficial in my role, particularly in Quantity Surveying.
Mathematics has equipped me with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work with complex numerical data, both of which are crucial in accurately estimating costs, managing budgets, and analysing financial models in construction projects.
The logical thinking and attention to detail that I honed during my studies are invaluable assets in ensuring the financial viability and success of the projects I work on within Vistry Group.
What certification is associated with your career?
The key certification associated with my career path is the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accreditation. Achieving RICS accreditation is a significant milestone in the career of a Quantity Surveyor and other related roles within the construction industry.
It demonstrates a high level of professional competence and ethical standards. I am currently working towards this accreditation, which will further validate my skills and expertise, and open more opportunities for advancement within the industry.
What advise do you have for someone looking to pursue this career path?
For those considering a career as a Commercial Graduate in the construction industry, my advice is to embrace the diversity of experiences that rotational programs offer. Be open to learning from each department, as this will give you a well-rounded perspective and help you identify your areas of interest.
Develop strong analytical and communication skills, as these are crucial across all roles. Seek mentorship from experienced professionals, network within the industry, and stay informed about industry trends and innovations.
